April Meeting Location Change and other Fun News!

 The evening of our April 14th meeting, they will be giving us an Accuquilt demonstration, a demonstration on a new tool to create piping in our bindings, as well as demos of other tools and notions.  Due to this great and unexpected opportunity, we will delay our program on modern quilt designs to a future meeting. 

We will still be doing our regular activities as well, such as: Show n' Tell, Aha Moments and Tips, My Quilting Story, What's New, etc.  We've just added a shopping opportunity!

We will be making these gorgeous blocks from our own stash to make a donation raffle quilt for North Lake Presbyterian Church.  We appreciate their generosity in allowing us to meet each month in their beautiful building! Here's the link to instructions for making a string pieced block. Please make at least four, and bring them with you to the next meeting. You may use turquoise colors for the blue, as well as some variety in the greens. Please use a minimal amount of the brown tones, as we want this donation quilt to reflect colors most used in modern quilts.

March 10 Meeting

The Central Florida Modern Quilt Guild met Monday, March 10 at North Lake Presbyterian Church in Lady Lake, Florida. 

Quilt Story

In a new segment to each meeting, Carly shared her personal quilt story, telling how she began quilting three years ago. She share her first quilt, made for her grandmother using fabrics of special significance to family members.

Our chapter leader, Karen, introduced our new activity of selling $1 chances to win a pass-along basket of modern quilting goodies that will be refreshed each month by the recipient. Monies raised will be used to purchase supplies to make a thank-you quilt for North Lake Presbyterian Church.

The evening's focus was on WIPs or UFOs, as individuals chose to share their ongoing/unfinished modern projects.

Plan to attend our Sew-In on Saturday, April 5 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Oxford Community Center. Cost is $5, payable to Karen. Coffee will be provided. Bring your lunch or plan to go out and pick up something. Come to sew on whatever you wish!

A New Challenge Is Looming.....

The Modern Quilt Guild has announced a new challenge, and we would like all of CFMQG to join in on the fun that would like to!

The fabric we will be using is a brand new collection called Petal Pinwheels.  Please see the entire collection here:   http://www.michaelmillerfabrics.com/shop/collections/petal-pinwheels.html

At this time, the only online shop I’ve found that  is advertising that they supply this collection is Hawthorne Threads.  They expect this fabric line to be available in Mid-March.  Please see their photos and information on the fabric here: http://www.hawthornethreads.com/fabric/designer/michael_miller_house_designer/petal_pinwheels

The specific fabrics we will be using will be those that the national MQG is also using, as shown below.  The one exception is that we will not use the gray flowered in the upper left corner.  We will use the remaining five colors.

 
HERE ARE THE SPECIFICS OF OUR CHALLENGE:

1)  Each participant will receive a fat-eighth of each of the five fabrics described above.
2)  ANY additional Michael Miller fabric can be added to your fabric.
3)  ANY solid(s) can be added to your project.
4)  The project can be of any size.
5)  You must quilt your own project
6)  The challenge begins as soon as we have the fabric, which is projected to be at least by our meeting April 14th.  (I will order as soon as it is available, which they state should be mid-March.  I will have available times it may be picked up at my home as soon as I have it, for those who wish to do so.  The challenge is due on our August meeting date, and our "challenge show" will be on that date.

Our February 10th, 2014 meeting included 26 enthusiastic modern quilters ready to discuss, interact, explore new thoughts, and have fun! 

Mel Tuck gave a demonstration on a quick and easy binding technique that provided a "facing" for her project .... no binding showing on the front side.  What a fun way to bind and showcase "modern!"

Mel included corners in the facing of this project.  When turned to the back, it forms a cute "frame" to add to your backing design.

 

Beth Shutty delivered a program on how to make insert designs that had us all enthralled.  I could just see the imaginations in the room soaring!  She focused her program on inset circles, but included some on ovals, hearts, squares, etc.  I believe that several of us went home and pulled the freezer paper out of the drawers!  Her work is amazing, as you can see from the following:

A shout-out of CONGRATULATIONS to Beth for being named the winner of  "Best Modern Design" by remote judges of our recent Riley Blake Challenge.  Beth was presented with a bundle of Riley Blake Fat Quarters "Medium Circles" in a variety of colors.  We look forward to seeing what incredible creation she will accomplish from this bundle!

 Gloria Meacham brought in one of her favorite new toys - a circle attachment for her Bernina.  I think I see a demonstration coming up soon!

Carolyn Levant showed us a placemat that is one of a set she recently made.  What a great geometric design!  This had six corners, and she was pleased to be able to conquer those small mitered corners and hand sew the binding.

Cindy Cook brought in a cute little "Peek-a-Boo" block made with folded rectangles.  These blocks are being made into a child's quilt for KidsCentral.

Diane Bohn shared the sewing machine cover she made for her friend .... a very luck friend indeed!  This was made with her friend's color choices in mind.

This is a baby quilt top named "Ribbon Candy."  Diane was looking for a quick, jelly roll friendly pattern.  This is her second quilt pattern (coming soon!)  Those diagonal designs add an extra touch of modern to these gorgeous colors .... so many quilting possibilities.  Thank you, Diane, for sharing this WIP (Work in Progress).

We look forward to meeting again March 10 when we'll discuss modern elements as we all bring in WIPS to share.  This will be a great way to get ideas for layouts, quilting designs, color choices ..... decisions, decisions, decisions!  Four participants will also be sharing their own quilting story.  Each of our stories are special and unique.  Happy Quilting!

Riley Blake Challenge Reveal

The Riley Blake Challenge reveal took place at the Monday, January 13 meeting. Everyone attending the meeting had the opportunity to step into another room to view all 11 entries across one wall. 

Here are those entries, in the order in which they appeared.

Sixteen Waterfront Park fat quarters and one yard of Kona were generously donated by Karen, and given to the "Viewer's Choice" winner: Quilt #1 by Linda.

Viewer's Choice second place recognition went to: Quilt # 9 by Beth.

Viewer's Choice third place recognition went to: Quilt #11 by Bette.

Photos were judged by Jill Guffy and Marny Buck, co-owners of Modern Quilt Relish, who selected a "Best Design" winner, based on criteria for modern quilt design. Quiltmaking techniques were not considered in their decision.

We offer grateful thanks to Jill and Marny for taking the time to study the photos and choose a winner!

This bundle of 15 Riley Blake fat quarter dots, generously donated by Linda, are being given as the "Best Design" award  to: Quilt #9 by Beth. Congratulations!

January 13 Meeting

Twenty-six quilters turned out, with five of them first-time visitors, to the first meeting of 2014! We're off to a flying start!

Our new president, Karen, capably stepped up to tell us about upcoming activities - Sew-Ins, programs, and a hint about something related to Radiant Orchid, the 2014 Pantone color of the year.

We then went into another room to view the Riley Blake Challenge quilts. Eleven projects were completed, shared and voted on. A Viewer's Choice winner was selected. More about our challenge quilts in a future post, as we await the results of who will receive the "Best Design" award.

We showed the last two blocks made by those who participated in the 2013 Bay Area Modern BOM (see links at right). These are the 12-1/2" String Star blocks.

Our program about color theory - hue, value, contrast, and various types of color families - was presented by Doris.

Her homemade color wheels, one in primary "Lego" colors (right) and the other in modern colors (left), were effect tools for teaching us about color, and Doris generously made two additional color wheel sets that were given as door prizes. Thank you for your educational program, and for generously sharing with us, Doris!
