Meeting - A QuiltCon Overview

Our March meeting focused on QuiltCon as we revisited the winning quilts, had a show and tell of vendor purchases, and in general talked about the event and our perceptions of it. It was an excuse for  21 of us who attended QuiltCon to revisit our experience!

President Karen welcomed visitors and new members Kay and Margaret. Thirty-one people were in attendance.

Thanks to the MQG, Karen was able to use the MQG photos to put together a visual presentation of  winning QuiltCon East quilts, starting with "Bling," the 98" X 98" Best of Show quilt made by Katherine Jones of Tasmania, Australia.

Selina shared her "Stax Quilt", a pattern given to MQGers who did not attend QuiltCon. She quilted it herself, on a domestic machine.

Lora shared her king-sized "Chevron News" quilt, a pattern by Zen Chic. It was longarm quilted.

Linda T. and her "Wavelength" quilt, a foundation paper-pieced pattern by Freshly Pieced.

Lynda, visiting from Canada, participated in a chapter MQG challenge using an "ugly" fabric, making improv three-rail fence blocks.

Debbie used fabrics from a fat quarter bundle, and the Alison Glass "Swatch" pattern to make this quilt top which she then longarm quilted using quilt designs learned in a QuiltCon workshop with Christina Cameli.

Pat was given fabrics and pieces of paper, without instructions, and asked to make something. She figured out that everything was for a foundation paper-pieced heart!

Kathy made a cuddly patchwork quilt for her four year-old granddaughter.

Mary made this for her first great grand-daughter. She quilted it on her domestic machine.

Karen proudly showed her last completed UFO - she has no more! This quilt is made using blocks from the 2013 Bay Area Modern BOM. She quilted it on her Tiara with a variety of designs.

Member Kudos

Three of our Central Florida MQG members have recently had quilts that appeared in national shows.

First, at QuiltCon (February 23-26) in Savannah, Georgia, we saw Linda's "Lime 'n Luxe" quilt that was juried into the Michael Miller Luxe Challenge. It is domestic machine quilted. Following QuiltCon, this quilt is being kept for photography and inclusion in an MQG "coffee table book," due to be released in 2019.

Note that Linda is wearing a top she made using a knit fabric designed from our Central Florida MQG logo. You can find our logo fabrics here, on Spoonflower.

See all the Michael Miller Luxe Challenge entries that were juried into the show here, on the Michael Miller Fabrics blog.

Two more members whose quilts were juried into a show are Mary and Beth. Coincidentally, the quilts appeared side by side from March 1-4 at the AQS (American Quilter's Society) show/QuiltWeek in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Mary's quilt is called "Circles and Squares," and was domestic machine quilted.

Beth's quilt is called "Cut Diamonds," and was domestic machine quilted.

Great efforts, quilters! We're very proud of you!
