August 14 Meeting

The August Central Florida Modern Quilt Guild meeting was great! We had 37 quilters in attendance, with seven more joining our chapter. Our membership now stands at 60!

Welcome to our newest members! We hope your curiosity about making modern quilts is satisfied as you begin engaging with the MQG at the national level and with local members, and regularly attend meetings. We all hope you enthusiastically learn about and make quilts with the modern aesthetic!

Quilters attending the meeting who also participated in Debra Jalbert's (MadeofHonorQuilts) July 15 "Leftovers" workshop, brought their partial projects to show.

Debra, who is a member of the Orlando MQG was a guest to the meeting, so she shared a little about the workshop which is based on using scraps to make an improv type quilt. We had a great time at your workshop, Debra! Thank you for coming to our meeting, and sharing your talents with us!

If you'd like to see pictures from the July 15 workshop, go here

Sharon showed a bag she made for a cat-loving friend using a Libs Elliot print for the body of the bag.

Nancy F. shared this colorful quilt.

Selina participated in Debbie Jeske's (AQuiltersTable) Instagram improv-along, and shared this quilt finish that has been claimed by Selina's sister.

Dee has challenged herself to FMQ all the UFO quilt tops she's collected. She spiral quilted this one with a walking foot.

This too is walking-foot quilted.

This "Candy Pop" quilt is from Christa Watson's book Machine Quilting With Style and is walking foot quilted.

Kathy is making quilts for WWII veterans for an project that pairs a WWII veteran with a VietNam veteran to provide emotional support for one another.

Ardie had several finishes.

This is a Lee Heinrich (FreshlyPieced) foundation paper piecing pattern called "Diamond Tread."

Nancy M. showed a quilt she made for her husband.

Jodie showed her scrappy pixelated sewing machine, a pattern by Center Street Quilts.

President Karen showed "Wavelength," a foundation paper piecing pattern by Lee Heinrich (Freshly Pieced). Karen spiral quilted it on her Tiara quilting machine.

Our program about quilt batting - "It's What's Inside That Counts" - was presented by member Victoria Rondeau who is a distributor for Pellon.

Everyone received a packet of Pellon batting samples, along with helpful information about various types of batting fibers, batts with and without scrim, and washing and care instructions. Many of our quilters now want to try quilting with wool!

Thank you for a very informative program, Victoria!

Looking Ahead!

The Central Florida MQG has been invited by Mancuso Show Management that produces World Quilt Florida to exhibit modern quilts at their big event in Orlando!

Event dates are January 18-20, 2018.

Member Beth is leading a team to plan how we will prepare for our exhibit, including:
  • selecting up to 30 members' quilts that represent characteristics of the modern quilt aesthetic
  • preparation of each quilt, such as sleeves for hanging
  • promoting our Central Florida MQG chapter at the event
  • attending World Quilt Florida to answer attendees' questions
  • deliver and pick-up of the quilts to the Orange County Convention Center, Orlando
  • individual quilt exhibit signage
After Beth's committee meets on Saturday, July 29, expect more information about how to participate. Be thinking about a modern quilt or two you'd like to submit for possible inclusion in the exhibit. This is an exciting opportunity for our chapter to share and display modern quilts!

Leftovers Workshop

On Saturday, July 15, 12 of our members attended an all-day "Leftovers" workshop with Debra Jalbert in Clermont. Debra graciously made arrangements for our workshop to happen at her home church-school, as we often have difficulties finding a private place that will allow us to sew.

Debra is a member of the Orlando MQG, is on Instagram as MadeofHonorQuilts, and blogs at MadeofHonorQuilts, where we've been able to watch her develop the process and methodology for creating improv quilts from leftovers.
Debra explains the development of her process. Quilts behind her are those she has made or are in progress.
Explaining the first task.
Much of the success of such a design depends on 1) color combinations and contrast; 2) fabric print and solids choices; 3) and a graduation in the size of the pieces.

After completing the first step, this is what everyone's teenies looked like

Continuing in a similar manner, the pieces began to grow.

Sewing machine received a lot of intense focus.

As much rotary cutting happened as piecing.

This is Debra's quilt that started the whole leftovers improv piecing concept.

At the end of the workshop we had a nice wrap-up with discussion about the process, and a review of everyone's work. We may see some pin cushions, or pillows, or quilts from these starts!

We presented Debra with a basket of fat quarters, so she can begin she own Leftovers Quilt #12!

July 10 Meeting

We were thrilled to have 46 people attend our Monday evening meeting!

We welcomed 11 first-time visitors, and another 14 people joined to become official members of our chapter and the MQG.

We welcome to our chapter: Brenda, Nancy, Jeanette, Marie, Judi, Janet, Linda, Alice, Karen, Carole, Sharon, Barbara, Char, and Patricia!

We hope you'll jump in to participate in our social opportunities, educational resources, and the fun of being a Central Florida MQG member!

The July program, "Design Remix," was presented by Beth and Debbie who attended Riane Menardi's (VesselQuilts) QuiltCon workshop and lecture in Savannah, in February.

Presenting a PowerPoint show, and a few pieced examples, Beth and Debbie gave an overview of how to deconstruct a traditional quilt block and make it modern.

Members were asked to bring several copies of one of five quilt blocks. Then using a ruler to mark where to cut up the blocks, the papers were cut apart, and rearranged into a variety of modern arrangements.

Following the exercise, quilters walked around to see what designs everyone came up with.

Each of us left the meeting with a greater awareness of the possibilities for making new quilt designs from old blocks. Thank you Beth and Debbie!
Patriotic Pinwheels is an original design by Linda using Painter's Palette Solids. She quilted it with a combination of machine quilting and big stitch hand quilting using size 8 perle cotton.
Beth, who was one of our program presenters, designed and walking-foot quilted this piece. She used a wavy ruler to mark quilting lines across the quilt at intervals. Then, by "eyeball" she quilted to fill in the spaces inbetween.
Selina is working her way through the "No Scraps Left Behind" book by Amanda Jean Nyberg (our October 2 guest speaker) and made this "Nines" quilt.
She also made some of Amanda Jean's note cards, using little fabric scraps to decorate them.
Karen T. is making items for a family wedding. Eight of these tote bags...
... a quilt for the flower girl
and a University of Florida quilt for a little boy.
