Many kudos to Beth for launching and successfully implementing our first 2019 challenge. She was thrilled - as all of us were! - to have 25 modern quilts submitted for consideration (Viewer's Choice Award), a drawing for prizes, and show and tell review.
Our "It's All About Color" challenge was introduced by Beth at our January meeting, when she presented a wonderful program about color, and where to find color inspiration. Following her presentation, everyone received information about the challenge.

In short, a challenge piece had to be at least 20" X 20" using color combinations, techniques, and/or methods that were "new to you." Everyone needed to provide a picture or explain where inspiration was found.
After each quilt was numbered and laid on tables, members were invited to peruse and vote for one.
In numerical order, here are all 25 entries in the It's All About Color challenge.
#1 - Barb was influenced by Amish quilts to make a foundation paper-pieced, and an improv-style log cabin block in bright colors. She quilted this 20" X 20" quilt on a Brother sewing machine.
#2 - Karen E. @sunrayatplay made this 43" X 59" quilt for her first great-granddaugher. Blocks are from Mama Says Sew BOM blocks, following a Fibonacci method of choosing colors. Karen walking foot quilted this on her Janome 9400QCP sewing machine.
#3 - Rosemary @daisys_driver was inspired by a knitted scarf, made for her by a friend, when she chose these color to make this Jessie Kurtz pattern. She used a Bloc Loc Half-Square Triangle Ruler for cutting and trimming, and for the first time made homemade basting spray to make the quilt sandwich. Rosemary walking foot quilted this on her Viking sewing machine.
#4 - Edith @quiltedfish4 has already returned to Canada, so she sent a photo of her 21" x 21" completed quilt. To make this a two-color quilt, she used white and the 2019 Pantone color of the year, Living Coral, for piecing and the thread color for walking foot quilting.
#5 - Cindy @cbubblesnsews chose her favorite color purple and it's complimentary color yellow - using gradated fabric - to make this quilt. She walking foot quilted it on her home sewing machine.
#6 - Beth @blue_dragonfly5 made this 51" X 59" quilt she calls "Hot Crab Salad," according to a design she created in EQ8. She used warm colors (not usual for her) from a Blueberry Park layer cake, and the Classic Curves Ruler to make Drunkard's Path blocks enhanced with black and white stars. She walking foot quilted it on her home sewing machine.
#7 - Linda H. @flourishingpalms was inspired by a DesignSeeds.com color combo to make her 31" X 31" quilt combining three different improv techniques - two learned from Sarah Nishiura, and one from Carole Lyles Shaw. She used her least favorite colors (blue and pink), and (for the first time) gradated fabrics. Linda used rulers and free motion quilting to quilt on her Bernina 770QE sewing machine.
#8 - Missy @2quiltingminions made her (mostly-finished) 36" X 36" "Crossover Sewn" quilt following Donna Jordan's "Chopsticks" pattern. She was inspired to choose these colors that coordinate with multi-colored drapes in her home. Missy quilted it on her Viking Sapphire 960Q sewing machine.
#9 - Dee @quilterdee used a Zen Chic jelly roll to make her 49-1/2" X 49-1/2" Wonky Zen Cabin quilt. She walking foot quilted it on her Bernina 780 sewing machine.
#10 - Ardie @fatquarteraddict was inspired by a friend's photo, taken in Vietnam, to make this 29" X 36" "Hoi An Nights" quilt. After quilting the black background on her longarm, she appliquéd each design with couching and quilting on her home sewing machine.
#11 - Karen T. @yorkie3mom made "Rainbow Circles" using Painter's Palette Solids for the first time. This design was begun in a 2019 QuiltCon class with Jen Carlton-Bailly using BettyCrockerAss curve templates. Karen quilted it herself on her Janome 9400.
#12 - Margaret @redhotbobbin made her 38" X 32-1/2" "Roundabout Tetrad" quilt inspired by a color workshop in which she participated. She chose three colors (tetrad) on the color wheel and used her new Accuquilt Studio Die Cutter to cut circles. Margaret quilted it on her longarm, an APQS Millennium.
#13 - Gwen @flaquiltz used the 2019 Kona Color of the Year, Splash, as background for this 42" X 60" quilt that was inspired by a lit wall and lit swimming pool at an Orlando hotel. She quilted circles, and a serpentine stitch on her Bernina 750.
#14 - Betty @zcabed was inspired by the design on a paper napkin to make this 33" X 29" quilt she calls "Tickled Pink." She used a hexagon ruler to create her own design that she quilted on her sewing machine.
#15 - @iquiltalot_fl made her 24" X 24" quilt entirely improvisationally, inspired by a traditional Wedding Ring quilt block. She quilted it on her Elna sewing machine.
#16 - Nancy @nancymenn made her 29-1/2" X 21-1/2" quilt using analogous blues. She quilted it on her Bernina 770QE, and used a Minute Miter tool for more accurate binding corners.
#17 - Linda T. @blu24berry was challenged by friends on our quilt retreat, to use-up leftover Zen Chic Flow prints in her least favorite color (orange) to make this round log cabin table runner. She quilted it herself.
#18 - Lynette @netsyclay made her 16" X 46-1/2" "Streak of Sunshine" runner in an analogous color combination. She was inspired by a 2019 AQS Drunkard's Path quilt block to create this design that she free motion quilted on her Janome sewing machine.
#19 - Linda W. made her 24" X 25" English paper-pieced "Modern Grandmother's Flower Garden" quilt after taking Jen's (Red Thread Studio) EPP workshop last November. Linda quilted it on her Bernina 720 sewing machine.
#20 - Bette @quiltylady1 made this 33" X 42" quilt she calls "Exclamation." She was color-inspired to use both 2019 colors of the year - Kona Splash, and Pantone's Living Coral - adding a dash of purple for interest. She used the "what if" technique for the design, and quilted it on a sewing machine.
#21 - Mel @snomelt was inspired by her own stashed fabrics to make this design using Jen Carlton-Bailly's BettyCrockerAss curve templates. She walking foot quilted it on her sewing machine.
#22 - Janice made her quilt (being held by Mel) using the same curved templates that Mel used. (They worked on these together during quilt retreat.)
#23 - Corinna @potterquilter made "Rainbow" a 40" x 50" quilt using a new color combination for her - rainbows. Also new to her was creating an asymmetrical design, and using white for binding, She quilted it on her sewing machine.
#24 - Marie @pottersewer was a helper in Carole Lyles Shaw's April workshop for Central Florida MQG. Choosing complimentary colors on the color wheel, and following Carole's technique, she made this 21" X 21" quilt called "Complimentary Curves." Marie quilted it on her Brother Luminaire using the embroidery quilting feature.
#25 - Jane @gonequiltinginflorida made "Candy Corn," a 64" X 68" quilt using a two-color theme. One color is Tiger Lily, the 2018 Kona Color of the Year. She used a Bloc Loc Half-Rectangle Triangle Ruler for cutting and trimming, and walking foot quilted it with orange and yellow thread colors on her Babylock sewing machine.

The Viewer's Choice Award winner was Betty (quilt #14) whose napkin-inspired hexagon quilt made us all "Tickled Pink" on her behalf!
