May Play

Twenty-one quilters attended our May 14 meeting. Though we had no visitors, we welcome a new member - Barb!

Dee shows: on the left, her "Quilty Love" mini, a test block for the Instagram #OmbreGemsQAL (quilt along) she's doing led by @Emily_Dennis_; and on the right, "Little Star" by Thimbleblossoms.

Beth showed her 10" X 10" triangle mini, her entry in Curated Quilts triangle challenge, using this color palette.

We encourage our members to participate in challenges, to help expand and grow your understanding of modern. One suggestion is to follow @curatedquilts on Instagram, and/or sign up for their newsletter here

Lynn shared this quilt, a Zen Chic pattern called "Contrasting." Batting is Hobbs wool; quilting was done on a longarm.

We gratefully recognize Selina's donate of this quilt to North Lake Presbyterian Church who passes along patriotic quilts to veterans. What a nice way to say thank you for allowing us to use the church for our meetings. Thanks Selina!

We also very much appreciate the program Selina gave to us: "Foiling Around With Appliqué." She showed us a technique for creating appliqué pieces with turned-under edges.

Everyone had a chance to try making their own appliqué shapes.

Selina's samples...

It's a technique worth knowing, and we're sure we'll see some of this appliqué in our members' work.

2019 QuiltCon Charity Quilt Challenge
Jane has volunteered to lead our challenge quilt, and will be assisted by Dee. A small committee has been formed to determine how to meet the challenge:

Small Piecing

using some or all of this color palette

More information to come!

Update

Saturday Sew-In
We enjoyed sewing together on Saturday at the Belleview Public Library. The library had recently celebrated a Harry Potter-themed event, and one character - a Dementor - remained behind to keep us company.
Dementors are among the foulest creatures that walk this earth. They infest the darkest, filthiest places, they glory in decay and despair, they drain peace, hope and happiness out of the air around them. ... Get too near a Dementor and every good feeling, every happy memory, will be sucked out of you.

Thankfully we managed to deflect the Dementor's attempts to suck happy sewing vibes from us - and from Beth in particular!

"Florida Waves" Update
Last weekend was the online fundraiser for St. Jude Children's Hospital - the annual event is called "St. Jude Time to Give Back Golf and Tournament and Celebration."

Our 2018 QuiltCon Charity Quilt, "Florida Waves," was put up for auction with a value of $400.

The quilt was made by Karen E., Linda H., Linda T., Jane, and Frances, and along with the book First Time Quiltmaking, written by Linda H., sold for $200. The entire auction raised $59,213.

Meeting Reminder
Our May meeting is Monday evening!

Don't forget to bring these supplies for a hands-on lesson - "Foiling Around With Appliqué" by member Selina:

  • large mug-rug size (suggested 10” X 12”) background fabric
  • 1 to 4 fabrics for curved appliqué shapes (egg, heart, circle, etc.)
  • appliqué notions - needle; pins, thimble, thread; scissors to cut paper; and scissors to cut fabric
Selina will show us how to prepare fabric for appliqué. You may turn your project into a mug rug following her instructions.

And don't forget that it's not too late to register ($40) for Anne Sullivan's "Design As You Go" improv workshop the afternoon of Monday, June 11. Bring your money to the meeting, because afterward the workshop will be opened to non-members for $50. Let us know!

Post Retreat Review

Beginning Thursday, May 3, 22 modern quilters retreated at Luther Springs in Hawthorne, Florida. Nearly everyone stayed until Sunday afternoon, and seven more stayed one more night, until Monday, May 7!
Back, L-R: Tambry, Karen T. Linda T. Jodie, Karen E. Cindy, Beth, Bette, Monique, Debbie, Mel
Front, L-R: Linda H., Dee, Jane, Lora, Janice, Dawne, Ardie, Joey, Jill, Peggy
During our time at Luther Springs, we had the occasion to present to Miss Sarah (facility director) our 2017 QuiltCon Charity Quilt, "Paradise Central."

This quilt was pieced by many of our members, and quilted by President Karen, and Linda H.

We donated the quilt to be used at the camp, as Miss Sarah desires. It may hang on the wall at the to-be-built new community room.

The retreat committee worked very hard, planning and making numerous little gifts for everyone. These are just a few of them: a spiral notebook cover, with notebook; a small basket with tissues; and homemade soap by Cindy. (We love her homemade soaps!)

Here, quilters were choosing mug rugs made by Mel.

There were a few impromptu lessons... Here Lora demonstrates freezer paper foundation piecing.

Linda H. gave a "Web" lesson and this is Peggy's web.

Led by Mel, several quilters made blocks and/or assembled quilt tops. These four completed tops will be finished and donated to Quilts of Valor.

And there's a little bit of a story behind this picture of President Karen holding a "hazard" block pieced by Tambry. Go ahead and ask Karen about it. 😉

To see all the pictures taken during retreat, visit Instagram

In that hashtag you'll see 62 pictures of wonderful modern projects, some fun outtakes of quilters, and just general fun! The socializing was fantastic! Members: You simply won't want to miss retreat 2019, so save the date! March 22-25.

April 16 Meeting

Thirty-two quilters attended our April meeting. We welcomed one visitor, and three new members!

In the absence of President Karen, Vice President Bette led our meeting.

Challenge Co-Chair Debbie reminded members of our Inspiration Challenge - to share progress with members, including on Instagram with the hashtag #cfmqginspirationchallenge. Finished quilts accompanied by an inspiration picture is due at our July 9 meeting.

For all the details, read this blog post.

Important! Volunteer Coordinators Needed!
The Modern Quilt Guild, in it's April 15 newsletter, announced the 2019 Charity Quilt Challenge.

The link to details about the challenge are here, and includes information about the color palette...

...and the theme: Small Piecing.

Quilts made for this challenge will be displayed in Nashville, Tennessee, from February 21-24, 2019, when QuiltCon is at the Music City Center. Afterward quilts are returned to chapters for donation as desired.

We want our Central Florida MQG chapter represented at QuiltCon! Two volunteers are needed to lead our chapter to make a quilt. Please let us know of your interest soon! Send an email.

Instagram Challenge Winners
Giveaway winners of the #cfmqgmod Instagram Challenge were selected using random.org. Winners were: @easy_beezee, @thoroughly_modern_ninny, @willwork4fabric, @quilterdee, @rchianese26, @gummybeargirlquilting, @blue_dragonfly5, and @dbcfla.

Special thanks to Wonderfil Specialty Threads (@wonderfilspecialtythread on Instagram) for their donation of 20 spools of 12-weight and 50-weight threads. Also thank you to members Dee and Linda H. who donated handmade items; and Linda H. who also donated several Moda Matchbox kits.

Linda T. finished her All Sorts quilt, a design begun when Amanda Jean Nyberg (CrazyMomQuilts) visited our chapter in October 2017.

Linda shared two traditional blocks, Pinwheel (upper), and Broken Dishes (lower) showing each as a traditional block (right), and as an elongated modern block (left).

She used them in this quilt called "Shards," found in a quilting magazine. Linda quilted both All Sorts and Shards on her home sewing machine.

Rosemary made parts for a traditional quilt and turned them into a more modern-looking quilt with modern fabrics and an asymmetrical layout. She walking-foot quilted it on her home sewing machine.

Tambry shared her Emoji quilt that walking foot and free motion quilted herself.

Becky shared several modern finishes, all machine quilted on her home sewing machine.

This small quilt is pieced with Mini Pearl Bracelets fabrics.

Becky also made three improv-type mug rugs but the photo turned out too blurry to share. 😞

The evening's program "Gridwork Quilting With Pizzazz!" was presented by member Cindy.

She gave everyone an opportunity to draw their own quilting designs on pages of pre-drawn grids, and then demonstrated free motion quilting.

See Cindy in action in this video!

Thank you, Cindy, for sharing with us!

Anne Sullivan Comes to CFMQG

On Monday, June 11, the Central Florida MQG is proud to host modern quilter and designer, Anne Sullivan (@PlayCrafts) for a workshop and program. Anne will share her innovative modern designs and techniques with members at her "Design As You Go" workshop; and though a wonderful evening program: "You Are Creative!" Her program is open to all members, guests, and anyone interested in modern quilting!

Anne is a member of the Orlando MQG, and has a true gift for designing and creating modern intentionally-designed and improvisational quilts. You'll find her quilts as free patterns offered through the MQG (link here, and here, to MQG members), and she has shared her approach to creative designs on this episode of season two of Fresh Quilting TV.

You won't want to miss this opportunity to learn from the best of the MQG!

Twenty members of our Central Florida MQG chapter will have the opportunity to take Anne's "Design As You Go" workshop on Monday afternoon, June 11, from 12:45-3:45 pm.

Anne will explain and discuss aspects of design elements and principles, that we’ll put to work creating an improvisational mini-quilt. Improvisation is an ongoing design exercise, where you design-as-you-go, constantly modifying what happens next based on what you’ve done before. By learning some design concepts, it gives you much more power over your improvisational quilt and get it closer to your desired vision. Anne will also review techniques for cutting and piecing improvisational shapes either with or without a ruler, including gentle curves.

Our workshop is at Amazing Grace Lutheran Church, 4886 County Road 472 (Rainey Trail), Oxford.

The cost is $40 to members with registrations being accepted at the April 16 meeting. Or, if you're unable to attend the meeting, send payment to our post office box: PO Box 1355, Lady Lake, FL 32158.

Central Florida MQG evening program with Anne Sullivan

As for Anne's lecture/program, it's free to Central Florida MQG members, but go ahead and invite your friends! For only $5, they too can hear a fabulous lecture about Anne's approach to being creative.

Anne's lecture is the same inspiring lecture that she presented at QuiltCon 2017 in Savannah! So if you weren't able to attend that (at a considerably greater cost!) you definitely don't want to miss this opportunity to hear Anne's talk. She will have you itching to make your own, original-design modern quilt!

$5 at the door for non-members (no pre-registration needed)

Lecture: You Are Creative!
If you have trouble thinking of yourself as creative, Anne will set you straight! She explains what it means to be creative, providing tips and tricks to be your most creative self. Everyone is creative, including you!

Anne's program begins at 6:30 pm at Amazing Grace Lutheran Church, 4886 County Road 472 (Rainey Trail), Oxford.

This will be a fabulous day for everyone with a penchant for modern quilts. We hope you will join us!

Email CentralFloridaMQG@gmail.com if you have questions.
