Sew-In
This Saturday, August 10 is our monthly Sew-In at the Belleview Public Library. We gather at about 10 am to hang-out... sew, chat, share what each other's working on, take a little lunch break, and keep sewing until we run out of steam. 😀
Stop in to sew and say hi! It's a great way to get to know each other better.

August 12 Meeting
Due to an unexpected circumstance, Linda H. isn't available to give her long-planned "Big Stitch Quilting" program. 😞 But, she promises to present it at a future, to-be-determined date in 2020. 

In lieu of what was planned, we've put our heads together to come up with several - what we think - are interesting meeting topics.

1) Let's Talk Specialty Rulers

Specifically, let's look at designs and patterns that can be made with these rulers:

• Sew Kind of Wonderful - Quick Curve ruler, and Mini Quick Curve ruler
• JayBird Quilts - Hex 'n More ruler, and Super Sidekick ruler

If you have made a quilt with any of these rulers, please bring them to the meeting. We'll show and share. Then, maybe you'll want to go home with one of those rulers checked out from our Ruler Lending Library! 

2) Quilt Challenges
With two 2020 QuiltCon challenges for individuals, and the "Text" charity challenge for MQG chapters...

...as well as a Curated Quilts (magazine) challenge, and planning our own 2020 challenges, we have lots of challenges to discuss! You'll hear about them from President Karen, QuiltCon Charity Quilt Challenge Chair Jane, and Chapter Challenge Chair Beth.

These challenges are meant to grow us as modern quilters... to take the next step beyond following a quilt pattern.

3) Fabric Dyeing
Beth will share her experiences with fabric-dyeing, including the ice-dyeing technique. If you've already tried fabric dyeing, please bring your fabrics and/or quilts made with your self-dyed fabric. This is new area for us to explore.







Bring to the Meeting

1) If you made a zippered snack bag pouch in last month's Sew-In workshop with Cindy, or you've made a zipper pouch since then, bring it to show. And if anyone cares to fill their zipper pouch with the product from the bag... feel free! 

2) Show and Tell - We always love to see what you've created, so bring your quilts, along with a completed Show and Tell Form. Not only does the form remind us of what modern elements are in your quilt, it also provides information needed for our blog and Instagram posts.

3) Nametag - Wear it! We always have visitors and new members, so please be courteous and let us know who you are. Thank you!

We're taking registrations for a a few openings left in Christina Cameli's September 7 "Texture Quilting" workshop. (Click on calendar date, above/right.) Her workshop has been opened to the public, so we are accepting non-member registrations as well.

We're also taking registrations for Rebecca Bryan's October 14 "Color Play" workshop (Click on calendar date). On September 1, Rebecca's workshop will open to non-members.

Looking Way Ahead
On November 11 we're looking forward to a program presented by member Carol P. who will share information about "Pressing Matters."

You won't want to miss this as Carol reviews different types of irons, pressing tables and mats, and other accouterments for flattening fabric! 😊

Saturday Sew-In Workshop

We had more than a dozen quilters turn out for our Saturday Sew-In, most who came for the opportunity to learn how Cindy @cbubblesnsews makes adorable snack bag zipper pouches. Cindy calls them "Zippered Wrapper Bags."

We're very grateful for the use of the Belleview Public Library large room.

Cindy provided hand-outs, showed several assembly options, and gave great demonstrations.

The huge variety of snack and treat bags make for endless possibilities for cute zippered bags! Candy, popcorn, potato chips, crackers, raisins, and even dog treat bags!

Any Central Florida MQG member with a quilting technique or project to share is encouraged to talk with President Karen about offering a Sew-In workshop. Everyone enjoys learning, and especially spending time together. One of the very best aspects of quiltmaking and sewing is being with friends! Thank you, Cindy, for this wonderful opportunity!

Half-Square Triangles Remix

We welcomed 28 members, 1 new member, and 2 guests to our July 8th meeting.  The focus of this meeting was half square triangles.  We enjoyed a Show and Tell of recently finished projects, which were featured on our previous post.  Some additional information on a few of these projects are as follows:

Dee S. created this memory quilt from her granddaughter's artwork through the years.  It is 41.5 x 47.5, was made on her Bernina 780 and walking-foot quilted by Dee.

Dee also finished this 46 x 58 Caterpillar quilt for her first great-grandchild on her Bernina 780.  The pattern is by Kristina Brinkenhoff of Center Street Quilts.

Marie D. made this Carissa purse on her Brother Innova from fabric won at our recent challenge.

"Black Tie Affair" was made by Betty S.  It is 37.5 x 37.5.  She first made curved pieced blocks, cut them diagonally, and sewed them together "half-square triangle" fashion.  She therefore introduced it as our "segway" into the next part of our program featuring half-squared triangles.

For our program, members were asked to bring in both traditional and modern half-square triangle quilts.  Our purpose was to discuss how to make traditional more modern, and these quilts inspired much discussion.  Modern options were offered, such as adding negative space, eliminating borders, change of fabric choices, asymmetry, changing scale, going "off the grid", etc.  While looking at these quilts, think about what changes you would suggest:

Diane C. made four sets of paper-pieced blocked from "Year of Scrappy Triangles" by Sewn with Leila.  This quilt created much discussion!

Margaret H. sewed this on her Bernina 880, and quilted it on her APQS Millenium.  The center part is Missouri Star's "Night Sky" pattern.

"Thank You for Your Service" was made by Margaret H.'s Aunt Helen on her ancient Pfaff.  It is 70 x 78, and quilted by Margaret on her APQS Millenium

We finished the evening with viewing a Fresh Quilting segment from the Modern Quilt website.  We enjoyed watching Riane Menardi show us easy ways to make new patterns for an entire quilt from changing up one block on #203 "Mix It Up."

June Meeting

Many of our members are away now, but we were happy to see 22 quilters at our Monday, June 17 meeting, including a first-timer who already joined our chapter. Welcome, Mike!

Linda T. showed her "On the Dot" quilt, a pattern from Modern Quilt Studio (Ringle and Kerr). It's 54" X 78", and Linda quilted it on her Bernina 153. The asymmetrical layout prompted conversation about the modern-ness of this quilt.

Another Linda - Linda W-L - showed her finished Modern Grandmother's Flower Garden quilt, begun in a workshop with Jen Lee when Jen taught English paper-piecing to our chapter last fall.

Using the leftover pieces of fabric from cutting hexagons, Linda made "The Dance of the Dragonflies." She used Anne Sullivan's technique for cutting curves, learned in Anne's workshop in June 2018. Linda quilted both quilts herself.

Dee showed "Ombré Waves," made with an ombré confetti metallic dot jelly roll, by V & Company from Moda. She used a 2-1/2" quarter-square triangle template to cut shapes. The pattern used for this 46" X 57" quilt  is "Needle in a Haystack" by Tiffany Hayes.

This 56" X 71" quilt is "Stars and Stripes," a pattern by Thimbleberries using Bonnie and Camille fabrics. Dee quilted both quilts on her Bernina 780.

Bette completed this 17" X 64" table runner using improv blocks she made during our April "MidCentury Modern Curve" workshop with Carole Lyles Shaw. Bette quilted it on her Brother sewing machine.

Nancy took Beth's "Interleave" workshop to make this 21" X 20-1/2" quilt. She quilted it on her Bernina 770QE.

Our third Linda - Linda H. - showed her 70" X 82" "Ring Me" quilt, started in our chapter's workshop with Amanda Jean Nyberg (CrazyMomQuilts) in November 2017. Linda modified the design to add strips of pieced solids between the rings, and put everything on point. Using her Bernina 770QE, she free motion quilted concentric circles all over the quilt. 

The evening's program - Alternate Quilt Layouts - was presented by President Karen, with assistance from Cindy. Basically, we saw where to go on the MQG website, and learn how a traditional block can be made modern. By using cropping, scale, elongation, and color changes, an entire quilt can be made.
