May Play
Twenty-one quilters attended our May 14 meeting. Though we had no visitors, we welcome a new member - Barb!
Dee shows: on the left, her "Quilty Love" mini, a test block for the Instagram #OmbreGemsQAL (quilt along) she's doing led by @Emily_Dennis_; and on the right, "Little Star" by Thimbleblossoms.
Beth showed her 10" X 10" triangle mini, her entry in Curated Quilts triangle challenge, using this color palette.
We encourage our members to participate in challenges, to help expand and grow your understanding of modern. One suggestion is to follow @curatedquilts on Instagram, and/or sign up for their newsletter here.
Lynn shared this quilt, a Zen Chic pattern called "Contrasting." Batting is Hobbs wool; quilting was done on a longarm.
We gratefully recognize Selina's donate of this quilt to North Lake Presbyterian Church who passes along patriotic quilts to veterans. What a nice way to say thank you for allowing us to use the church for our meetings. Thanks Selina!
We also very much appreciate the program Selina gave to us: "Foiling Around With Appliqué." She showed us a technique for creating appliqué pieces with turned-under edges.
Everyone had a chance to try making their own appliqué shapes.
Selina's samples...
It's a technique worth knowing, and we're sure we'll see some of this appliqué in our members' work.
2019 QuiltCon Charity Quilt Challenge
Jane has volunteered to lead our challenge quilt, and will be assisted by Dee. A small committee has been formed to determine how to meet the challenge:
Small Piecing
using some or all of this color palette
More information to come!

Update
Saturday Sew-In
We enjoyed sewing together on Saturday at the Belleview Public Library. The library had recently celebrated a Harry Potter-themed event, and one character - a Dementor - remained behind to keep us company.
Thankfully we managed to deflect the Dementor's attempts to suck happy sewing vibes from us - and from Beth in particular!
"Florida Waves" Update
We enjoyed sewing together on Saturday at the Belleview Public Library. The library had recently celebrated a Harry Potter-themed event, and one character - a Dementor - remained behind to keep us company.
Dementors are among the foulest creatures that walk this earth. They infest the darkest, filthiest places, they glory in decay and despair, they drain peace, hope and happiness out of the air around them. ... Get too near a Dementor and every good feeling, every happy memory, will be sucked out of you.
"Florida Waves" Update
Last weekend was the online fundraiser for St. Jude Children's Hospital - the annual event is called "St. Jude Time to Give Back Golf and Tournament and Celebration."
Our 2018 QuiltCon Charity Quilt, "Florida Waves," was put up for auction with a value of $400.
The quilt was made by Karen E., Linda H., Linda T., Jane, and Frances, and along with the book First Time Quiltmaking, written by Linda H., sold for $200. The entire auction raised $59,213.
Meeting Reminder
Our May meeting is Monday evening!
Don't forget to bring these supplies for a hands-on lesson - "Foiling Around With Appliqué" by member Selina:
- large mug-rug size (suggested 10” X 12”) background fabric
- 1 to 4 fabrics for curved appliqué shapes (egg, heart, circle, etc.)
- appliqué notions - needle; pins, thimble, thread; scissors to cut paper; and scissors to cut fabric
Selina will show us how to prepare fabric for appliqué. You may turn your project into a mug rug following her instructions.
And don't forget that it's not too late to register ($40) for Anne Sullivan's "Design As You Go" improv workshop the afternoon of Monday, June 11. Bring your money to the meeting, because afterward the workshop will be opened to non-members for $50. Let us know!

Post Retreat Review
Beginning Thursday, May 3, 22 modern quilters retreated at Luther Springs in Hawthorne, Florida. Nearly everyone stayed until Sunday afternoon, and seven more stayed one more night, until Monday, May 7!
Back, L-R: Tambry, Karen T. Linda T. Jodie, Karen E. Cindy, Beth, Bette, Monique, Debbie, Mel Front, L-R: Linda H., Dee, Jane, Lora, Janice, Dawne, Ardie, Joey, Jill, Peggy |
During our time at Luther Springs, we had the occasion to present to Miss Sarah (facility director) our 2017 QuiltCon Charity Quilt, "Paradise Central."
This quilt was pieced by many of our members, and quilted by President Karen, and Linda H.
We donated the quilt to be used at the camp, as Miss Sarah desires. It may hang on the wall at the to-be-built new community room.
The retreat committee worked very hard, planning and making numerous little gifts for everyone. These are just a few of them: a spiral notebook cover, with notebook; a small basket with tissues; and homemade soap by Cindy. (We love her homemade soaps!)
Here, quilters were choosing mug rugs made by Mel.
There were a few impromptu lessons... Here Lora demonstrates freezer paper foundation piecing.
Linda H. gave a "Web" lesson and this is Peggy's web.
Led by Mel, several quilters made blocks and/or assembled quilt tops. These four completed tops will be finished and donated to Quilts of Valor.
And there's a little bit of a story behind this picture of President Karen holding a "hazard" block pieced by Tambry. Go ahead and ask Karen about it. 😉
