QuiltCon and Saturday Sew-In

Our Saturday Sew-In at the Belleview Public Library was a lovely time of sewing and socializing, as it always is. There was lots of talk about QuiltCon which has been happening in Pasadena, California since Thursday, February 22, and ends today.

This is the 2018 QuiltCon Best of Show winner "Going Up" by Stephanie Skardal, an individual member from Clemmons, North Carolina.

If you haven't yet seen the winning quilts, go here. First place winners are on the left; second place winners are in the middle; and on the right, third place.

"Leftovers #7" by Debra Jalbert

Be sure to note the first place winner in Improvisation. The quilt is "Leftovers #7" by Debra Jalbert who not only attended our February meeting (she is a member of the Orlando MQG), but presented our chapter with her "Leftovers" workshop in July last year. Here's that blog post about it. We're so proud of Debra!

Along the same lines, though many of us weren't at QuiltCon, some of our Instagram friends were, and shared these photos of our QuiltCon Charity Quilt on display. All those quilts made by chapters and individuals were hung on the hallway walls, outside the convention hall. It looks like our quilt hung next to one from Texas!

The challenge theme was "Modern Traditionalism" using this color palette.

Chapter members Karen E., Jane, Linda H., Linda T., and Frances (former member) made "Florida Waves."

When the quilt is returned to us, it will be donated as a spring auction/fundraiser for St. Jude Children's Hospital.

Along with working on our own projects at the Sew-In...
L-R: Karen E. and Karen T.
Dee
L-R: Linda T. and Beth
L-R: Edith and Ruth
Linda H.
...we swapped fat quarter-sized solids.

It turned out to be an opportunity for all of us to handle the different brands and talk about the qualities of each - Painter's Palette, Kaufman Kona, Moda Bella, and RJR. Quilters are always learning!

Our next Sew-In returns to the regular Saturday, the second Saturday of the month. The Sew-In is on Saturday, March 10.

So, let's plan to meet!

Reminder: Our regular Central Florida MQG meeting is Monday, March 5. That's a date change due to a conflict with the church where we meet.

Three Reasons to Sew-In

While many of us are not going to QuiltCon in Pasadena, California (this week, Thursday through Sunday), we do have a great opportunity for our own gathering!

Saturday Sew-In, February 24
10 am to 6 pm

Due to a conflict at the Belleview Public Library, our regular Sew-In date was moved to this coming Saturday, February 24. And, because our activity coincides with Quiltcon, we're participating in the MQG's Instagram #quiltconfromhome

Here are three reasons you need to to attend our Saturday QuiltConFromHome Sew-In:
Spectrum Quilt by Julie Herman

1) You'll get to participate in our chapter #QuiltConFromHome solids fabric swap. Just bring two different color solids - fat quarter or quarter-yard cuts - to exchange. We're swapping quilt-shop quality fabrics such as Kaufmann Kona, Moda Bella, Painter's Palette, Riley Blake, RJR, and the like. What a great way to add variety to your solids stash!

2) Get an Instagram lesson! If you want to participate in our Instagram challenge (#cfmqgmod), you still have time to learn how to use the Instagram app and start posting pictures of modern makes you're working on. Every picture you post is another entry into the drawing which ends April 8.

3) Saturday is a chance to work on whatever you want to work on. Don't miss this opportunity to get advice on a modern project, show us what you're doing, and make new friends!

Please bring all your sewing stuff, and stay for as long or as little as you can! Don't forget your lunch and drink. But if you do forget, you can drive to Summerfield to pick-up a bite.

See you at the Belleview Public Library!

Meeting Date Change!

Our March meeting is NOT on the 12th. We will meet one week earlier - March 5.

While we try very hard to avoid changing our meeting from the second Monday of the month, it's necessary to do so when the church where we meet has another activity - this one is a biggie - that impacts our chapter members' access to parking/distance to the church.

So, please plan to attend on Monday, March 5 - one week sooner than usual. Our meeting is at 6:30 pm in the North Lake Presbyterian Church fellowship room.

Member Beth will present the program: "Inspiration for Modern Quilt Designs."

February 5 Meeting

Please Note! Contrary to what was announced at Monday evening's meeting, there is NO SEW-IN  Saturday, February 10 due to Belleview Public Library having a room use conflict. Instead, please mark your Sew-In Day calendar for Saturday, February 24 - same time (10-6); same location.

Our February meeting was one week earlier than usual due to the church having a conflict for facility use. However, a date change didn't deter attendance! Forty quilters met, and of them, four were first-time visitors, and two guests are members of the Orlando Modern Quilt Guild.

Diane (@dbcfla) wowed us with a quilt she made using Kaffe Fassett fabrics. She followed a pattern, but changed it, making partial blocks and negative space to create a modern design. We're impressed!

Cindy (@cbubblesnsews) showed "A Perfect Pair" zip pouches she made from three fat quarters. Design by Sew Deja Vu.

Cindy also showed her big "Chevron News" quilt. She domestic machine quilted it using many different quilting designs. Great work!

Nancy F. made up this small quilt using stashed fabrics and half-square triangles.

Karen D. made "Berry Merry Wreath," a free Craftsy pattern by Anne Deister of @springleafstudios

Two of our members participated in the Instagram #jellyrollrugalong led by @kairleoaks and @heritagethreads The rugs are made from 2-1/2"-wide fabric strips folded and sewn over batting strips. Pattern by @romaquilts

Dee (@quilterdee) showed hers.

Then Jodie (@simplykidsocala) showed hers which is a smaller version using part of a jelly roll.

Jodie also made this 70" X 86" pixelated heart quilt, a kit from @makervalley. Jodie used a polyester sheet from Target as backing.

Susan (@sesquilter) and Debbie (@dbook1) showed "Line Dance," an 82" X 94" quilt made by members of the Big Cypress Chapter of Quilting Guild of The Villages. This is the guild's 2019 raffle quilt, with raffle tickets currently for sale at $1 each, or six for $5. Fundraising monies will be given to Camp E-Nini-Hassee, a Central Florida camp for adolescent girls with emotional or behavioral difficulties.

The evening's program by Beth did not happen! Unfortunately, due to technical difficulties - a PC that would not "talk" to our projector - Beth was unable to give her Powerpoint presentation "Inspiration for Modern Quilt Designs." However, not to worry!

March 12 Meeting
We'll have a second chance to hear Beth speak when she presents "Inspiration for Modern Quilt Designs" at our March 12 meeting!
Where do we get ideas for making a unique modern quilt? How do modern quilters come up with their ideas? Beth will provide many examples to help launch your own deign process.
Instagram
Don't forget to take modern quiltmaking photos to post to Instagram! Use the hashtag #cfmqgmod on each one. Every post is another chance at prizes that will be given away at our April 9 meeting. (You don't need to be present to win.)

Reminder! There is NO SEW-IN Saturday, February 10 due to Belleview Public Library having a room use conflict. Instead, please mark your Sew-In Day calendar for Saturday, February 24 - same time (10-6); same location.
