January 13 Meeting and Challenge Information

We were delighted to have 38 quilters attend our first meeting of the new year, two of whom were first-time visitors.

President Karen @sunrayatplay led our meeting, introducing 2020 executive committee members and committee chairs, and providing a review of MQG news.

Of special interest is the MQG's request for members to make a Quilt of the Month pattern to submit for possible display at QuiltCon 2021 in Atlanta.

To start considering what quilt pattern you'd like to make:
  • Go to the MQG website
  • Log-in
  • Choose "For MQG Members"
  • Select "Patterns, Webinars and Articles"
  • Choose"Quilts of the Month" to see options.
More information about this call for submissions will appear in your email in-box - in the February issue of Modern Monthly.

Members are reminded that we have many great modern quilting books in our library, and a nice selection of rulers, all of which may be checked out at meetings. To see what we have available, click a tab at the top of this page: "Lending Library Books" or "Lending Library Rulers."

Members who were in the chapter five years ago, when we first officially joined The Modern Quilt Guild, were invited to share a memory or two. To celebrate, we enjoyed mini cupcakes generously provided by Patti C. of Patty Cake Bakery in The Villages.

Dee @quilterdee shared a 32" X 42" rug made from a pattern by Roma Quilts. She sewed this on her Bernina 780 using a Jingle Pops jelly roll, by Hoffman fabrics.

Dee @quilterdee made this 49" X 49" "Mega Star" quilt from a Zen Chic pattern. She used a jelly roll called Good Tidings that she won in an Instagram giveaway. Dee pieced and quilted this on her Bernina.

Jane @gonequiltinginflorida shared this 28" X 21" cutting mat/ruler carrier made with Moda fabrics Shibori by Debbie Maddy.

Jane @gonequiltinginflorida pieced and domestic machine quilted this 56" X 64" quilt called "Thicket," a pattern by Gingiber using Gingiber fabrics.

Chapter Challenge
Our meeting concluded with Beth's @blue_dragonfly5 presentation and the introduction of our first 2020 chapter challenge.

Influenced by a Mid-Century Modern Artist

Please note: Quilts are due April 6! This is not an error!

Due to a conflict at North Lake Presbyterian Church, our April meeting has been moved to the 6th.

Beth presented a visual review of 10 artists and their mid-century modern designs that may be used as inspiration for a quilt.

Those 10 mid-century modern artists are (Click on name):

Do not duplicate an artist's design.

When choosing colors for your quilt, consider using Kona's Color of the Year (#coty) "Enchanted."

Or use the Pantone color of the year "Classic Blue." For a close match, use Kona Surf - another blogger says it's Kona Regatta - or Painter's Palette Solid Lapis.

Please keep your quiltmaking progress private (do not post on social media) because a Viewer's Choice winner will be chosen by vote at our April 6, 2020 meeting.
