Workshop, and Instagram Winners

Twenty quilters from Quilting Guild of The Villages, the Gainesville Modern Quilt Guild, the Jacksonville Modern Quilt Guild, the Tampa Modern Quilt, and the Central Florida Modern Quilt Guild attended Sherri Lynn Wood's all-day workshop: Modern Block Improv

Sherri explained and expanded on several design elements - ways to change a Flying Geese block.

She then demonstrated how to rotary cut without a ruler, and how to piece free-form shapes.

After piecing our own blocks, based on our color choices after five minutes of "centering," we discussed everyone's blocks, evaluating them - not judging them.

Sherri explained design elements and "bleeding" to arrange blocks and choose "fillers." (All this information is in "Score Six" of Sherri's book, The Improv Handbook for Modern Quilters.

This is the improv design Sherri created from her explanation to us.

During the afternoon, quilters continued piecing those blocks together using the techniques Sherri suggested. Here are most of the partially completed improvisational designs.

These Central Florida MQGers will wholeheartedly agree that their workshop with Sherri with extremely enlightening. They are, from L-R front row: Debbie, Toni, Sherri Lynn Wood, Karen, and Selina; and L-R back row: Carla, Judi, Susan, Kelly, Beth, and Linda.

  1. Thank you Debbie, Linda, Karen and the rest of the board for all your effort, in planning, coordinating with the The Villages Guild and working through the logistics for the workshop and lecture presented by Sherri Lynn Wood this week. It is no small task to engage, gather and care for national teachers. Well done ladies!!!
