May 11 Meeting

The May 11 meeting at North Lake Presbyterian Church saw 25 quilters in attendance. Of those, four were first-time visitors. Among them, we welcomed Debra who was visiting from the Orlando MQG.

The meeting program came from members! Everyone was invited to share a traditional quilt, or an attempt at making a modern quilt that perhaps failed. With each quilt shown the question we answered was: What modern elements could have been incorporated to make the quilt more modern, and position it further to the right on the modern continuum?

Members are encouraged to visit the MQG's resources page to view Jacquie Gering's September 2014 webinar "Modern Quilting: Know It When You See It," for a more complete understanding of the continuum, and what constitutes a modern quilt.

Members shared their "I tried to make it modern" quilts:

Our First Retreat

From Thursday morning, May 7, to Sunday afternoon, May 10, 24 quilters from the Central Florida MQG and Gainesville MQG retreated at Luther Springs in Hawthorne, Florida. As you will see from these photos, we had a fabulous time!

Two businesses supported our retreat.

Make Modern magazine, a digital-only subscription magazine from Australia, donated three free copies for selected quilters, and offered discounts to retreaters. Thank you!

Soak supported our retreat by sending four bottles of Flatter for each of our ironing stations. As we pressed out those stubborn fabric folds, we enjoyed the scents - Yuzu, Celebration, and Fig - and one bottle of Scentless. Thank you!

Gainesville MQG member, Lora, brought fabric bolts from her DragonflyQuiltWorks Etsy shop, so we could admire and shop.
